In a recent, and extremely candid, interview, CEO for EA, Andrew Wilson, has discussed Anthem’s launch, as well as a lot of other stuff, but here I’m going to specifically cover what he said about Anthem. It’s really interesting that EA’s CEO is having such an open conversation when there’s so much negativity in the public eye for Anthem at the moment.

The thing about Anthem is that it’s a game-as-a-service, meaning it’s designed to generate revenue over time, as opposed to purely bring in money from sales or DLC drops. Games such as FIFA and Apex Legends have achieved this, but for some reason it all went wrong with Anthem.

Wilson says that IPs live on a seven to ten year cycle. If he had to think about Anthem in terms of that cycle length, then he sees that it hasn’t had the launch either EA or the players wanted, but Bioware are going to get there eventually and make it something special. Wilson expressed faith in Bioware because they’ve already shown they can create games players love, feels that they will do it again with Anthem.

Diving into what Anthem was for both EA and Bioware fans, Wilson explains that Anthem brought together two different groups of players. The first were Bioware fans, expecting a rich story, meaningful interactions with characters, and multiple endings. The second group were hardcore RPG fans and hardcore MMO fans, both looking for deep customisation, hundreds of hours of gameplay, and an endgame that keeps them engaged.

When these two groups of players came together to play Anthem they suddenly found that neither of them played the game in the same way. This caused friction between the groups, and actually neither one got what they were expecting.

It’s at this point in the interview that Andrew Wilson steps out as EA’s CEO to say that the publisher is far from ready to pull the plug on Anthem. He and everyone at EA believe that Bioware have created something incredible with Anthem, and they see the path forward for it similar to the one taken with Star Wars Battlefront 2.

When Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched it was a mess. Players were actively able to pay their way to be better in the game, and it pissed a lot of players off. EA worked on the game, chopping and changing bits and pieces here and there, eventually creating a game with a dedicated player base that still enjoy the title to this day.

The way Wilson puts it, you’d be crazy not to back a Bioware game. Yes, Mass Effect Andromeda may have been a miss, but the developer has been consistently impressive with their releases, from the original Mass Effect trilogy, to crafting a brand new RPG world with the Dragon Age franchise.

Contrary to what all of the negative Freelancers, and those who love to hate on a game, think, EA don’t see Anthem as a game they should stop investing in. Instead, they think that the players who are there are invested int he combat, the world, the flying, and the Javelins, and they want to continue to serve those players, making a better and better game over time. Wilson puts across that by working with these players, the game will mature and attract more over time.

Finally, Wilson asserts that Bioware continue to work on Anthem based on player feedback, day after day. The developer will continue to do this until they have created a game that this core fan base are pleased with, and then they will work on expanding it.

After that the interview moves on to loot boxes, something that Anthem has never had an issue with. EA are in a lot of hot water regarding that subject, and I’m not going to cover it because it’s irrelevant to Anthem.

I think it’s interesting that in such a candid interview so many facts have come out. Once again we see EA aligning what their views of Anthem’s development are with the Kotaku expose. It’s undeniable that something happened too late in the game’s development.
