Howdy Freelancers! With week 2 of the Cataclysm in full swing I’m sure you’re all smashing Diana’s Landing multiple times a day. However, you might be surprised to learn that this isn’t the only new addition to the Cataclysm in week 2, at least I don’t think so.

What I’m talking about is Vara, and a brand new type of attack she seems to be pulling out that wasn’t present in week 1. The phase I’m talking about is part of her fire attack, the one where she disables flight and makes the ground literally lava, so you need to jump on one of the platforms around the arena.

Vara’s new Attack Phase

So that’s the when of this new attack phase, when Vara sets the ground on fire and disables flight, but what about the how of this attack phase?

At this point it was possible to stay on the platforms around the arena and shoot the crap out of Vara. If you had a long-range weapon equipped this was definitely the time to use it in week 1, but now you need to be cautious and watch your health.

What Vara does now is spawn in dozens of fiery balls that burn through your Javelin’s shield and health, putting you down almost as fast as her wall of death that closes in every now and then.

This attack caught me off guard a few times, because I didn’t realise I was losing health until I was down. Once it happens you need to move fast, jumping to another platform, or you’ll be burnt to a crisp. However, Vara will continue to spawn these orbs of fire for a few seconds, and they tend to occupy a quarter of the arena, so you really do have to jump over a few platforms in order to escape the trap.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, and this attack phase has been in the Cataclysm from day 1, but personally I never saw it. This leads me to believe that the Vara boss fight is going to get a new mechanic each week, until week 8 when Vara is a real force unto herself.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Is this an attack phase I’ve just not noticed before, or is it new to you as well now that I’ve said it?
